TYPE OF POSITION: Full-time (1.0); 2024-2025 school year; salary commensurate with experience and education (range $56,870 - $116,384)

LOCATION:  Middle School, Hopkinton, Massachusetts

The Special Education Teacher: Learning Specialist (EMPOWER Program) provides consultative services that support the achievement of students with disabilities in the general curriculum and in meeting Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals.  Hopkinton Middle School’s EMPOWER program is a long-term program, the goal of which is to provide social-emotional-behavioral support and academic assistance to students whose behaviors significantly interrupt their learning in the classroom. EMPOWER is designed to be a place where students can receive support and gain skills that will increase their ability to self-regulate and function successfully in the classroom and succeed within the school and community. The Learning Specialist reports to the principal, and the Director of Student Services. 

 

DUTIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Provides instruction to students with disabilities, applying appropriate knowledge to curriculum content, planning instruction effectively, and preparing reports as required;
  2. Plans assessment of student learning and monitors students' understanding of the curriculum effectively and adjusts instruction, materials, or assessments when appropriate;
  3. Evaluates, tries innovative approaches, and refines instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies available to teachers, to increase student learning, involvement, and confidence to learn;
  4. Demonstrates appreciation for, and sensitivity to, the diversity among individuals and strives to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning;
  5. Maintains and improves professional competence through attendance at professional development events, and by self-generated activities that meet district expectations and the requirements for re-certification;
  6. Coordinates student supplemental instructional programs with regular education teachers, team chairs, and principal;
  7. Shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of his/her grade/team/department, building and school district, attending all faculty and committee meetings as required, and district-wide committees as needed;
  8. Other duties, as assigned. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To be considered qualified for this position, candidates must have the following:

  1. Licensed, or eligible for licensure in Moderate Special Needs, at the appropriate level, by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary & Secondary Education, to include Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement;
  2. Bachelor's Degree, Master’s preferred, from an accredited college or university, in a related field;
  3. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, to children and adults;
  4. Commitment to remain current in content knowledge and teaching strategies;
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and in conformity with state certification requirements.
